Biography

Birth and Baptism

Benet's gravestone is still legible in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford. There are photos at Find a Grave. The inscription reads: "Benet Stanly ales Benet Welltarton mother of Nathaniel Stanly born Augus: 1: 1609 : deceased ian. 1664"

Bennett Tritton, daughter of Daniel and Alice (Goldhatch) Tritton, was christened 6 August 1609[1] In another source, baptized 30 July 1609 in Ashford, Kent, England.[2]

Marriage

Bennett Tritton married Thomas Stanley August 3, 1630, in Ashford, Kent, England[1][2][3][4]

After Thomas' death, she remarried to Gregory Wolterton.[2]

New England

Bennet and her husband Thomas traveled the long ocean voyage from England to Lynn, Massachusetts. Then after only a short time, they moved on to become some of the first settlers in Hartford, Connecticut. Another move took them to Hadley in what is now Massachusetts. Her second husband Wollterton, lived in Hartford and it was there that Bennet spent her final years.[5]

Death and Will

As her gravestone tells us, she died Jan 1664, and was buried at the Ancient Burial Ground in Hartford. No day was listed on the stone.

The will of Bennet Wilterton was dated 1 Nov 1664 and proved 28 March 1665. She had land and a house in Hadley, and land in Farmington. The real estate she left to her son and son-in-law, after the decease of her husband, who was named executor. Bequests were made to son Nathaniel Standley, son [son-in-law] Samuel Porter, daughter Mary's children, daughter ____ children, Hannah's children, son John Porter, daughter _____ Wadsworth (out of this son Wadsworth is to pay 20s to cousin Ruth Moore, wife of Isaac Moore) (A John Wadworth is refered to earlier, owing her money). Also she left money to Mr. Russell Pastor, cousin John Downes, Timothy Standly (son of John Standly), Isaac Standly (son of her sister Bacon) and Lois Standly. The rest of her things are given to her husband Gregory Wolterton to dispose. James Bebe was left a gun and sword and 40s.[5]
